Snow Day

Wilson and Friend
Hey, I like the hot weather
Left out in the cold
We have had some very cold weather here in the high desert. Wind and rain and snow and highs in the low 40's. Now I realize that my fotopage friends that live back in the midwest and east will find that really warm, but along with the wind and the snow it is very cold for this area. I love the snow and wish that it came here more than an occassional yearly event.

looks very cold, but pretty Mon 13-Mar-2006 16:13

Photo Challenge # 108......Hats

And how do you like riding in the Adelanto Grand Prix?
Hi,I am a dirt-bike riding dog.
Can we have dinner NOW?
At the Adelanto Grand Prix motorcycle race there was a guy that had this dog that rode with him on his motorcycle. As you can see he had his own helmet and water carrier back pack. He was really a cool dog and calmly sat on the bike while everyone took his photo. They were also selling tee-shirts to finance their way to Daytona, Fl. Hope they make it. (In the first shot the man was actually interviewing the owner of the dog.)

sooooooooo cute!!!!!!! Fri 3-Mar-2006 22:41

Too Long in the Sun?

You will see some really strange sights if you drive around in the desert very much. We came across this when we were coming home from the Colorado River a few days ago.
On a two lane road next to a burned out gas station, miles from nowhere, was this MEMORIAL to ????
The Shoe God????
The Barefoot Desert Lizard???
Dr Scholl???

Anyway we just had to stop and record forever this amazing collection of shoes left by many desert travelers were obviously trying to leave their mark on the otherwise barren landscape.
Unfortunately I had no extra shoes to leave, but maybe I hadn't had enough of the right kind of beverages to quinch my thirst along this lonely desert road.

Traveling the two-lane roads through the countryside is the best way to both travel and see things. Perhaps, between the time this place was a gas station and the time it burned, it was a little store that sold both shoes and propane. And then, when it burned, there was a terrific gas explosion that blew the shoe inventory all over the property. Perhaps...? Thu 2-Mar-2006 17:34

Your photos of the shoe trees came just as we had completed an assignment for a University course where we had to write about the life of a (one) shoe, each one being brought by another student. Perhaps the trees are where the (sole)mates of these singletons wound up. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experiences with us all.

The Highest and the Lowest of the US

From Hwy 395
Driving to get a little closer
Mt. Whitney
View all 6 photos...
After a major meltdown of my computer I am back with a new computer and some new photos. Last week-end we went for a little trip to the small town of Lone Pine that is on Hwy 395 in the Owen's Valley. We were not camping this time, we stayed in a cozy motel. There are so many interesting things to see in this area. Lots of spectacular scenery and places of interest in California's history. Also photo ops that never end. These photos are of the highest point in the lower United States (Mt. Whitney) and the lowest point in the lower United States (Death Valley). They are only a little over a hundred miles apart and so they can easily be visted in the same day. Mt. Whitney is 14,505 feet above sea level and Death Valley is 282 feet below sea level. Of course we only got close to Mt. Whitney since the weather and my desire to hike to the top were not cooperating. We did get to the lowest place in Death Valley though. Everywhere you look there are signs of geological activity that has gone on in this area for millions of years. Simply amazing!

Where's The Beef???

We spent the week of Thanksgiving at our favorite campground in the Owen's Valley. Ate our Turkey dinner out under the trees by the stream. The weather cooperated and stayed in thd high sixties except for the last day. Altogether a wonderful trip. There is a ranch that we drive past each time we go to town that always has a lot of cow-hides hanging on the wooden fence. I have always wondered what the horses and other cows that are in the field by the fence think about those cow-hides. I can only imagine their conversations.
"Well, now I know what happened to old Fred."
"Yes, you are right. I would recognize that big white patch any where."
"And they told him that they were just moving him to another field."
"Right....! You can't believe anyone anymore."
"That other one sure looks a lot like George, man, I knew that I hadn't seen him around lately "
"Poor fellows, sure won't be the same without them"
"We better hide out the next time that guy with the truck comes by."

What if you can stitch and make a panaromic photo? That would be magnificent!! Mon 5-Dec-2005 02:10
